Erwin Cotton Mills built the first of its two factories near the Cape Fear River in Harnett County in 1903. The town's original name was "Duke." The Erwin Historical Society has been at work for over 15 years. Both cotton mills shut their doors in 2000.
Dedicated to preserving the town's history at left are: Gigi Hughes, Eunice and  Colin McLaurin, Bebe & Joe Johnson and G.V.Fowler.

Erwin's History Room, located next to the library on East F Street, has many visitors. You will find hundreds of precious photos and artifacts beautifully displayed. It is open Wednesday - Saturday 2 - 4 p.m. For a special appointment call the library at (910) 897 - 5780.

Much of Erwin's original commercial block is intact. A handsome granite monument located there honors its textile past.

Guest are always welcome at the Erwin Manor Bed and Breakfast, run by the McLaurins. Originally the home of mill company president W. A. Erwin, it is enchanting. Call (910) 897 - 1685 for rates and reservations. Erwin's annual "Denim Days" Festival is held the first Saturday every October.
